The summer academy, designed for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors, provides a glimpse into the vibrant art scene at Penn State Altoona. One participant, Teagan Oswalt, an incoming sophomore at Penn Cambria, discovered the program through a serendipitous connection with her mother, who works in Penn State Altoona's healthcare program. Oswalt's experience highlights the program's ability to attract students through word-of-mouth and the desire for a fun and creative outlet.
Exploring Artistic Disciplines
The academy's curriculum is diverse, offering a range of artistic disciplines. On Monday, students worked with artist Michelle Ettrick, an adjunct instructor at the campus, to learn ceramics. The following days were dedicated to printmaking and graphic design, providing a well-rounded artistic education. Most participants are considering a future in art, and the academy offers a taste of what the visual art studies department has to offer.
Ryann Packard, an incoming sophomore at Altoona Area, designed her mug with a personal touch, featuring her favorite animal, a blacktip shark. Packard's decision to explore various artistic disciplines through the academy's hands-on approach reflects a desire for self-discovery and a deeper connection with art.
Creative Freedom and Relaxation
Jade Dupcavitch, a Bishop Guilfoyle Academy student, took a unique approach to her project, creating a vase without drawing designs beforehand. Her process-oriented creation showcases the freedom and creativity encouraged by the academy. Cali Wyper, another Altoona Area student, found inspiration in "SpongeBob SquarePants," creating a design reminiscent of Squidward Tentacles' house. Wyper's experience highlights the peaceful and relaxing nature of the artistic process, a sentiment shared by many artists.
A Collaborative Effort
The program is supported by a team of talented individuals, including Grace Brown, a recent Penn State Altoona graduate, and Jordan Alwine, who graduated from the university in 2023. Brown and Alwine assist Ettrick in guiding the students, helping them develop ideas and explore different art mediums. Brown hopes that the program will inspire students to consider attending Penn State Altoona, showcasing the many opportunities available to aspiring artists.
Alwine, who is experiencing teaching for the first time as a teacher's assistant, feels honored to be able to inspire others through art. She believes that art is often overlooked in today's society, making initiatives like this summer academy even more valuable.

Ettrick, the artist leading the program, hopes that the summer academy will continue in future years, providing a consistent outlet for young artists to explore their creativity. In addition to the summer academy, Penn State Altoona and Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 collaborate to offer the Sense-ational Endeavors summer camp, catering to children with disabilities. This camp provides a safe and welcoming environment for children to explore their senses through art, music, and social skill development.
